The South-South Zonal Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated the Chairman of the Edo State Council of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe, on his appointment as Acting Managing Director of the Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS).

The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the council's meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State, on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

The meeting, presided over by the Vice President of the zone, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, also lauded Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for what it described as a fitting and well-deserved appointment.

According to the council, Alenkhe's elevation to lead the state-owned broadcast outfit reflects his proven leadership credentials and wealth of experience in journalism and media administration.

The zone described the appointment as "a round peg in a round hole," expressing confidence in his ability to reposition the organisation for greater efficiency and professional excellence.

Beyond the appointment, the council condemned the growing incidents of attacks, harassment and cyberbullying targeted at journalists across the South-South region, urging security agencies to identify and prosecute perpetrators in order to safeguard press freedom.

The council also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the country and called on governments within the South-South region to strengthen community-based policing and other grassroots security initiatives to tackle emerging threats.

On infrastructure development, the council commended the Federal Government for the completion of the Aba–Ikot Ekpene Highway and noted the progress recorded on the Calabar–Itu Highway project.

It, however, urged the authorities to expedite work on ongoing road projects to reduce accidents and improve connectivity within the region.

The NUJ further called for urgent environmental remediation in oil-producing communities affected by years of pollution and environmental degradation.

The council appreciated the Cross River State Council of the union for hosting the meeting and ratified Elder Bolaji Anani as Zonal Patron.

It also charged state councils across the zone to strengthen support for zonal activities, ensure sustainable funding mechanisms and uphold the union's code of discipline as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
