CRPP blasts Edo government over rising kidnappings, questions security spending

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) has raised fresh concerns over worsening insecurity in Edo State, alleging that kidnappers, cultists and armed criminals have taken over major parts of the state and are operating with increasing boldness.

The coalition, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, and National Secretary, Hon. Nkama Waribe, expressed outrage over a reported broad daylight kidnapping at the Vegetable Market in Benin City on June 14, 2026.

According to the CRPP, armed men allegedly abducted a woman after they failed in an attempt to seize her husband, in an incident that has heightened fears among residents and further intensified concerns over security challenges in the state.

The group described as troubling the alleged ease with which the attackers carried out their operation, claiming the incident occurred close to Government House and within proximity to a police division.

"We are alarmed that armed criminals are now so daring and emboldened that they can operate right in the state capital in broad daylight," the statement said.

The coalition claimed that fear and uncertainty have spread across Edo State, with criminal activities affecting communities across the three senatorial districts.

It further alleged that the rising wave of insecurity is beginning to impact economic activities, stating that investors are becoming increasingly concerned about the security environment in the state.

The CRPP questioned Governor Monday Okpebholo's handling of security matters and called for urgent, proactive measures to tackle the situation.

The coalition also alleged that members of the Edo Security Network, established to strengthen internal security operations, were engaging in activities outside their mandate, including mounting checkpoints and extorting motorists.

The group urged the state government to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property and move beyond what it described as repeated expressions of sympathy following security incidents.
