The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been plunged into fresh controversy following the resignation of the Chairman of the institution’s Cult Renunciation, Reconciliation, Reformation, Rehabilitation and Interfaith Committee, who reportedly accused the Vice Chancellor of ignoring repeated security alerts prior to the killing of a part-time student near the university’s main gate.
The resignation, which came hours after the tragic incident, has heightened tension within the university community and reignited concerns over cult-related violence and growing insecurity around the campus environment.
Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the committee chairman, in his resignation letter, alleged that several warnings and recommendations aimed at preventing violent attacks within and around the institution were not acted upon by the university management.
He was said to have expressed deep frustration over what he described as the administration’s failure to take proactive measures despite mounting concerns over security threats linked to suspected cult activities around the university.
The slain student was reportedly attacked by unidentified assailants close to the institution’s main entrance, a development that has sparked outrage among students, parents and residents of the surrounding community.
The incident has further intensified scrutiny of the university’s internal security framework, particularly the effectiveness of preventive intelligence mechanisms and anti-cultism initiatives established to curb violence within the institution.
Stakeholders within the university community have called for an independent investigation into both the killing and the allegations contained in the resignation letter, insisting that urgent reforms and accountability are necessary to forestall further tragedies.
As of press time, the university management had yet to issue an official response to the resignation or the allegations levelled against the administration.
Meanwhile, security agencies were said to have commenced investigations into the killing, while surveillance around the university environment has reportedly been strengthened
