Edo Group Warns APC Against Alleged Anioma State Promoters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, a socio-cultural organisation dedicated to the preservation of Edo customs, culture, and territorial heritage, has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against fielding Mr. Ndidi Aghimien as a candidate in the forthcoming Edo State House of Assembly election.
The group, while addressing journalists in Benin City, alleged that the aspirant for Orhionmwon East Constituency I, covering the Igbanke axis, is being backed by promoters of the proposed Anioma and Toru-Ebe states.
Speaking during the press conference, the President of the movement, Mr. Iyamu Osaro Culture, alongside the General Secretary, Mr. Osayuki-Osa Benson, and the Diaspora Coordinator, Mr. Monday Ohuimumwen, JP, claimed that the proposed states are designed to carve out portions of Edo territory to the detriment of the state.
According to the group, investigations conducted into aspirants contesting within Edo South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections revealed what it described as “substantial sponsorship” of Aghimien by individuals advocating for the creation of Anioma State.
The movement alleged that the sponsors were strategically positioning aspirants to advance the proposed state creation agenda should they emerge victorious in both the APC primaries and the 2027 general elections.
It further warned that allowing individuals allegedly linked to such campaigns to occupy elective offices in Edo South could pose long-term political and territorial implications for the Benin people and Edo State as a whole.
The organisation urged the leadership of the APC in Edo State and Orhionmwon Local Government Area to abandon any plan to adopt Aghimien as a consensus candidate, stressing that Edo people must resist what it described as attempts to undermine the territorial integrity of the state.
The group also threatened to mobilise against aspirants allegedly associated with the proposed state creation agenda during the general elections if political parties fail to heed its warning.
“For avoidance of doubt, during the Second Republic when Bendel State was still one entity, Ndidi’s father, who was then a member of the State House of Assembly, moved the first major motion for Anioma State,” the group alleged.
Efforts to obtain reactions from Mr. Ndidi Aghimien were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, as the aspirant reportedly stated that he does not grant press interviews.
