The All Progressives Congress in Edo State has generated over N50.4 million from the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms to aspirants seeking to contest the forthcoming Edo State House of Assembly elections.
The revenue was realised from the sale of forms to 84 aspirants contesting for the 24 seats in the state assembly, with each form reportedly costing N6,000,000.
The party commenced its screening exercise on Saturday at the APC State Secretariat along Ikpokpan Road in Benin City, as aspirants from the 18 local government areas of the state trooped to the venue for accreditation and verification of credentials.
The exercise, which started at about 8:00 a.m., attracted party leaders, supporters, and security personnel deployed to maintain order throughout the screening process.
Speaking during the exercise, Chairman of the Screening Committee, Emmanuel Okoebor, said the screening was aimed at ensuring that only qualified and credible aspirants emerge to participate in the party’s primaries.
He directed serving lawmakers seeking re-election to take a bow before the committee, explaining that their credentials had already been submitted and verified ahead of the screening.
Okoebor assured aspirants of transparency and fairness, stressing that the committee would conduct the exercise in line with the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
As aspirant for Etsako East Constituency, Dr. Aminu Ibrahim, commended the screening committee for the peaceful process and expressed confidence that he will emerge victorious.
According to him, the high turnout of aspirants reflected the growing acceptance and strength of the APC across Edo State.
“The exercise has been smooth and properly coordinated. Party officials have shown professionalism in handling the screening process,” he said.
Despite the commendation, some contestants appealed to the party leadership to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants during the primaries, insisting that fairness and internal democracy remain essential to party unity and electoral success.
