In a move underscoring party cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections, the lawmaker representing Ikpoba-Okha Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Honourable Nicholas Asonsere, has emerged as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term.
The endorsement was formalised during his second term flag-off ceremony held at the APC secretariat along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City, where party leaders and stakeholders converged to signal unity within the ranks.
Announcing the development, frontline aspirant Tony Oluwatosin disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations among party stakeholders, including engagements with the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
He noted that aspirants collectively agreed to adopt a consensus approach to strengthen party unity and improve electoral prospects.
Oluwatosin explained that stepping down in favour of Asonsere was driven by the need to sustain ongoing developmental initiatives within the constituency, adding that the lawmaker’s performance and grassroots connection made him the preferred choice.
The endorsement also received backing from key figures within the party and affiliated groups. The APC Chairman in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, Hon. Sunny Ogbewe, alongside the party’s immediate past Legal Adviser in Edo State, Barrister Okoror, commended the peaceful resolution and described it as a demonstration of political maturity.
Similarly, the President of the Edo State Saw Millers Association, Comrade Friday Aiguokhian, lauded the consensus arrangement, expressing confidence in Asonsere’s capacity to deliver sustained development and effective representation.
In his acceptance remarks, Asonsere expressed gratitude for the trust reposed in him, pledging to build on his legislative record and attracting more dividends of democracy to the constituency. He reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive representation and responsive governance.
The consensus endorsement is widely seen as a strategic step by the APC to consolidate its base in Ikpoba-Okha, positioning the party for a competitive outing in the 2027 elections.
