Group warns APC against backing Edo aspirants linked to state creation agenda

A socio-cultural group, Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide, has raised concerns over what it described as clandestine efforts to advance the proposed creation of Toru Ebe and Anioma states, warning that such moves could undermine the territorial integrity of Edo State.

Addressing journalists in Benin City, the group’s President, Iyamu Osaro, and its Secretary General, Osayuki-Osa Benson, alleged that some aspirants preparing for the 2027 general elections in Edo South Senatorial District are being sponsored by promoters of the proposed states.

They specifically named Paddy Emmanuel Iyamu, an aspirant for the Oredo Federal Constituency seat, and Ndidi Aghimien, a contender for Orhionmwon East Constituency I, as individuals allegedly linked to the agenda.

According to the group, the alleged backing forms part of a broader strategy to position sympathetic candidates in elective offices who could facilitate the ceding of parts of Edo land if elected.
It warned that such an outcome would be detrimental to the state’s cultural heritage, unity and long-term political stability.

The movement said its position was based on what it described as detailed investigations into political alignments ahead of party primaries, particularly within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
It urged the APC leadership in Edo State, especially in Oredo and Orhionmwon local government areas, to refrain from granting party tickets to aspirants linked to the proposed state creation agenda.

The group further cautioned that any attempt to impose such candidates could trigger voter backlash during the general elections, noting that it may mobilise against individuals perceived to be acting against Edo’s interests.

Highlighting growing concerns among grassroots supporters, the group stressed the need for political leaders to prioritise collective interest over personal ambition, particularly on sensitive issues relating to land and identity.

Aiguobasinmwin Movement Worldwide reiterated its opposition to the creation of Toru Ebe and Anioma states from any part of Edo territory and called on stakeholders to act swiftly to safeguard the state’s integrity ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
