APC Gains Momentum in Esanland as Ordia, Edionwele Switch Allegiance

By Elvis Omoregie

Edo Central’s political landscape shifted markedly on Tuesday following the defection of former Senator Clifford Ordia and ex-House of Representatives member Joseph Edionwele from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that signals a significant recalibration of influence in Esanland.

The high-profile defections were announced at a large political gathering in Irrua, where party supporters and stakeholders converged in a show of strength that underscored the APC’s growing foothold in the region. The event, marked by chants of “Edo is shining,” reflected a coordinated effort to project unity and consolidate grassroots support around the ruling party.

Governor Monday Okpebholo, who formally received the defectors, described the development as an endorsement of his administration’s policy direction, particularly under the SHINE development agenda. The governor’s allies framed the defections as performance-driven, rather than a reflection of opportunistic political migration.

Ordia, who represented Edo Central in the Senate from 2015 to 2023, positioned his decision as a strategic alignment with governance outcomes. He called on stakeholders across the state to support what he described as a working administration, signalling a broader appeal for political cohesion beyond party lines.

Edionwele, a former federal lawmaker, reinforced the narrative of consolidation, declaring the APC as the dominant political platform in Esanland. He noted that the movement was not aimed at displacing existing party structures but rather at strengthening them, while hinting at further defections in the near term.

Analysts view the entry of both politicians into the APC as a convergence of legislative experience and established grassroots networks, factors that could significantly enhance the party’s electoral prospects in Edo Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development also raises concerns for the PDP, which has historically maintained a strong presence in the district. The loss of influential figures such as Ordia and Edionwele may weaken the party’s organisational structure and complicate efforts to retain voter confidence in the region.

While the APC stands to gain immediate strategic advantage, the long-term impact will depend on how effectively it integrates new entrants and manages internal dynamics within an expanded political base.

Tuesday’s developments highlight a broader trend of political fluidity in Edo State, where elite alignments continue to shape grassroots loyalty. As momentum builds, the implications for party competition and electoral outcomes in 2027 are expected to become more pronounced.

With shifting allegiances and emerging power blocs, Edo Central appears set for a new phase of political contestation, one that could redefine the balance of power in the state.
