Tension in Edo APC as Group Demands State Secretary’s Resignation
By Elvis Omoregie, Benin
A concerned group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo South Senatorial District has called for the resignation of the party’s State Secretary, Lawrence Okah, over what it described as an alleged prolonged stay in office.
Speaking with journalists in Benin City, the group’s coordinator, Ambassador Curtis Eghosa Ugbo, alleged that Okah has occupied the position for about a decade, a development he said runs contrary to the party’s constitutional provisions and principles of inclusivity.
Ugbo stated that the continued tenure of the State Secretary undermines internal democracy within the party, insisting that capable individuals across the seven local government areas in Edo South are qualified to occupy the position.
The group appealed to APC leaders across Edo State to intervene and ensure that Okah vacates the office to allow for fresh leadership that reflects fairness and equity within the party structure.
He also called on Governor Monday Okpebholo to promote inclusive governance within the party by prevailing on the State Secretary to step aside in the interest of unity and balance.
According to Ugbo, allowing the alleged tenure elongation to persist could amount to a disregard for the party’s constitution and weaken its ideological foundation anchored on justice and equal representation.
He warned that any official actions or endorsements made under what he termed an “illegal tenure” could expose the party to legal risks, especially in electoral matters, drawing parallels with past judicial outcomes in similar cases.
Ugbo further urged party stakeholders in Edo South to act swiftly to prevent internal discord, noting that the current situation poses a threat to the unity and growth of the APC in the district.
The group also hinted at possible legal action, with Ugbo declaring his intention, as a civil rights activist, to challenge what he described as constitutional breaches in court if necessary.
He maintained that no individual is bigger than the party, stressing that safeguarding the integrity of the APC must take precedence over personal interests.
