Banks, Stakeholders Back Edo Trade Fair to Drive Youth Empowerment, Market Access

Youth empowerment and employment generation will take centre stage at the 2025/2026 Edo Trade Fair, as the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture rolls out a restructured programme focused on economic inclusion and enterprise growth.
Jonathan Oboite, Trade Fair Director and Second Deputy President of BENCCIMA, said the fair is deliberately designed to connect young entrepreneurs and small businesses with access to finance, skills development, and market opportunities.
He disclosed that discussions with leading banks and development finance institutions have reached advanced stages, with commitments to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including the creation of employment opportunities for skilled youths.
“We are creating a platform where young people with skills can connect directly with financial institutions that are ready to support and even employ them. This goes beyond exhibitions; it is about real economic engagement,” Oboite said.
The seven-day fair, scheduled for the last week of November through the first week of December, will feature a mix of business, cultural, and innovation-driven activities aimed at boosting participation and economic value.
Highlights of the event include a “Face of Industry” pageantry targeting youths across the 18 local government areas, a cooking competition promoting indigenous agricultural produce, and exhibitions showcasing arts, crafts, and locally manufactured goods.
Oboite explained that the chamber suspended last year’s edition to allow for comprehensive research and restructuring, targeting gaps in agriculture, production, exports, and stakeholder collaboration across the value chain.
“We took time to study farmers, producers, financial institutions, regulators, and government to ensure that what we are putting together this year is impactful and sustainable,” he noted.
He added that consultations with regulatory bodies such as the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), NAFDAC, and export agencies were undertaken to ensure compliance and improve product quality.
Oboite said the fair is expected to attract at least 1,500 participants daily, providing businesses with opportunities to expand market reach and partnerships, while consumers benefit from affordable, high-quality goods, adding that the state government’s backing underscores confidence in the initiative’s potential to set a new benchmark.
