CRPP Condemns Attack on Oyegun’s Residence, Warns Edo Govt Against Intimidation of Opposition

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) has strongly condemned the reported shooting incident at the residence of former Edo State governor and national leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), John Odigie-Oyegun, describing the development as “outrageous and uncalled for.”

The incident allegedly occurred during a meeting of ADC members at Oyegun’s residence, sparking fresh concerns over political tensions in the state.

In a statement issued by its Edo Zonal Chairman, Samson Isibor, the CRPP expressed worry over what it described as a growing climate of political intolerance under the current administration in the state.

“It is outrageous and unacceptable. Edo State is not known for such dastardly acts. These developments give us serious cause for concern,” the statement read.

The coalition criticised the state government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that it has a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property irrespective of political affiliations.

According to the CRPP, democracy thrives in an atmosphere where pluralistic political participation is guaranteed and opposition voices are allowed to operate without fear of harassment or intimidation.

“The beauty of democracy lies in the existence of multiple political parties. Attempts to witch-hunt or intimidate opposition members undermine democratic values and weaken institutions,” Isibor stated.

The coalition further warned that rising political tension and insecurity could have negative implications for Edo State’s investment climate.

“Political brigandage will only scare away potential investors and damage the state’s reputation as a safe and stable environment for business,” the statement added.

CRPP therefore called on the APC-led government to ensure adequate security for all citizens and political actors, urging authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring perpetrators to justice.

The group also appealed for calm among political stakeholders, stressing the need to prioritise peace, dialogue and democratic engagement ahead of future political activities in the state.
