Edo Proprietors Cry Out Over Excessive Tax - Says Govt Is Pressuring Us To Make Life Difficult For The Citizens

The Edo State Chapter of Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, has decried what it discribed as a deliberate ploy by the State Internal Revenue Service to exclude the association from discussions bordering on agitations over the "astronomical taxes on members."
The association said such excessive taxes were not in the best interest of Edo people or the proprietors, adding, "it is more or less like the government is trying to pressure us to make life difficult for the citizens.
Chairman of the association in Edo State, Dr. Lemmy Russell, disclosed this following schools owners meeting with the chairman of the State Revenue Service, Hon. Oladele Bankole-Balogun.
Recall that the leadership of the revenue service insisted that tax issues are personal income, noting that individual school owners with reservations about taxes should approach the service.
However, Dr. Lemmy Russell emphasised that there ought to be some form of acknowledgement of the association's agitation and presence at the meeting.
According to him, "We went to the meeting with a lot of expectations, but were left not satisfied because we expected some salient issues to be addressed.
"As an association, we have tried our best to try to bring this (taxes) to the notice of the chairman of the board.
"But we kind of sense that they are trying to isolate the association from the issues at hand.
"it is not to say that they are not willing to review some of these taxes, but individually people have to come and they get attention, it will be fine."
