Edo assembly want kidnapping stopped

Edo State House of Assembly has called on security agencies in the State to be proactive in their bid to curb the spate of kidnapping in the State which it observed is resurging.

The Call was part of the resolution of the House taken from a matter of urgent public importance on the matter moved by the member representing Akoko-Edo constituency(2) Hon. Donald Okogbe who lamented that his constituency has become a den of kidnappers as about 8 cases were recorded within one month in areas around Auchi and Igarra, and Igarra and Ibillo.

He said notable persons including clergymen have fallen victim to the kidnappers who he said are armed with dangerous weapons as hunters who went for the rescue of some of the victims were killed.

Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Maria Edeko who supported the motion said the problem has become worrisome as farmers cannot access the farm for fear of being kidnapped.

Honorable members who supported the motion including Majority Leader Hon. Charity  Aiguobarueghian, Hon Kingsley Ugabi, Hon. Destiny Enabulele, and Hon.Yekini Idiaye described the problem as an ignoble assault on humanity that must be tackled with all seriousness.

They observed that bad roads across the State are one of the reasons why the hoodlums operate with ease stressing that now that Ember months are approaching the situation might increase hence the need for security agencies to step up their activities to curb the menace.

Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, who presided over the debate said the call became necessary because kidnappings are rising again in parts of the State including his constituency Owan West, where three ladies were kidnapped last month and were killed in the process.

The House urged the police to set up patrol teams on roads around Akoko-Edo, Esan North East, and other volatile areas of the State and also charged the National Drug enforcement agency (NDLEA) to arrest drug dealers in these areas and other parts of the State.
