The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has underscored the pivotal role of women in driving societal and economic transformation, as she chaired the 2026 edition of the LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award (LOWLA).

The event, held to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, brought together accomplished women across sectors, highlighting excellence, resilience, and leadership.

Speaking at the 14th edition themed “Give to Gain,” Ize-Iyamu urged women to remain disciplined and focused in pursuing their goals, stressing that resilience and determination are critical to overcoming challenges in a dynamic economic environment.

She commended the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) for sustaining the initiative over the past 14 years, describing it as a platform that not only recognises achievement but also reinforces collective responsibility toward building a more inclusive society.

“As we navigate shifting economic tides, the resilience of our women remains our most stable currency. When a woman rises, a family rises. When women lead, communities prosper. And when women are empowered, nations are transformed,” she said.

According to her, the LOWLA initiative serves as a call to action for both individuals and institutions to deepen investment in women’s empowerment as a pathway to sustainable development.

Highlights of the ceremony included the conferment of the LAPO Lifetime Achievement Award on Dr. (Mrs) Nosakhare Aladeselu, founding president of the African Women Empowerment Guild, in recognition of her contributions to advancing women’s development.

Other awardees were Nkechi Promise Ujunwa (professional category), Mrs. Adebukola Esther Taiwo (farming), and Animashaun Aminat Aderayo (business), reflecting the growing impact of women across key segments of Nigeria’s economy.

Founder of LAPO, Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe, alongside the organisation’s President, Barr. (Mrs.) Faith Negbe Osazuwa-Ojo, and Board Chairperson, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyefemi Obazee, were among stakeholders in attendance. Also present was Prof. (Mrs.) Lucy Adesomon Okukpon, Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, University of Benin.

The event ended with a renewed call for sustained investment in women, with participants emphasising that empowering women remains central to inclusive growth and national development.
