Okpebholo Urges Prayers for Unity, Economic Stability as Ramadan, Lent Begin Simultaneously

By Elvis Omoregie, Benin

Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, has described the simultaneous commencement of the holy month of Ramadan by the Muslim Ummah and the Lenten season by Christians as a significant and spiritually symbolic moment for Nigeria.

The governor said the rare convergence of the two sacred seasons presents an opportunity for collective reflection, unity and renewed commitment to the enduring values of faith, sacrifice, love and peaceful coexistence.

In a statement issued in Benin City, Okpebholo called on Muslims observing Ramadan and Christians marking Lent to dedicate the solemn period of fasting and prayer to seeking divine intervention in the affairs of Edo State and Nigeria at large, particularly at a time the nation continues to grapple with economic pressures and security concerns.

“This is a profound spiritual moment for our nation. As Muslims fast and Christians observe Lent, I encourage all faithful to lift Nigeria before God in prayer and supplication. Let us seek divine guidance to overcome our challenges and build a more united, prosperous and peaceful country,” the governor stated.

He noted that both Ramadan and Lent emphasise discipline, compassion, charity and selflessness—virtues he said are urgently needed to strengthen social harmony and national development.

Okpebholo further urged faith communities across Edo State to pray fervently for national unity, economic stability, improved security and lasting peace, stressing that spiritual renewal must complement ongoing governance efforts to reposition the state and the country for sustainable growth.

The governor also extended his goodwill to adherents of both faiths, wishing Muslims a spiritually fulfilling Ramadan and Christians a reflective and grace-filled Lenten season. He prayed that the sacred period would bring blessings, strength and renewed hope to families in Edo State and beyond.
